POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS PARTICLE ASTROPHYSICS GAMMA-RAY ASTRONOMY AND DARK MATTER DETECTION University of California, Los Angeles We invite applications for postdoctoral research positions in particle astrophysics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). UCLA is involved in forefront research in the areas of high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics and dark matter detection. Astrophysical gamma rays are produced by powerful cosmic accelerators (e.g. pulsars, active galaxies, or gamma-ray bursts) or by processes beyond the standard model of particle physics. UCLA has a major involvement in the VERITAS array of four atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, located in in southern Arizona and sensitive to photons with energies between 50 GeV and 50 TeV. See http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~veritas/ for details. We are seeking a talented individual to carry out research with VERITAS. There is also the possibility to analyze data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. FERMI-LAT a newly launched satellite instrument sensitive to photons between 30 MeV and 300 GeV. We encourage candidates with an observational/instrumental background in astronomy or an experimental background in astrophysics or particle/nuclear physics to apply. UCLA is involved in the GAPS experiment designed to detect dark matter through its decays to anti-particles. GAPS will be a balloon-borne instrument sensitive to low-energy anti-deuterons that could provide a unique signature for the annihilation of neutralino dark matter. GAPS will consist of a large array of Si(Li) detectors, surrounded by a Time-of-Flight (TOF) system. See http://gamma1.astro.ucla.edu/gaps/index.html for details. We encourage candidates with experimental backgrounds in particle physics, nuclear physics or astrophysics to apply. A Ph.D., or equivalent degree, in physics or astronomy is required. Applicants should send a CV and arrange for at least three letters of recommendation to be sent to: Prof. Rene Ong Department of Physics and Astronomy University of California Los Angeles, CA 90095-1547 Deadline for receipt of applications is March 1, 2009. (For inquiries please contact Prof. Ong at rene@astro.ucla.edu).
