I still remember it well, the night Richard Nixon was re-nominated at the Miami Republican National Convention to run for a second term. He flew directly to the celebratory concert that was going on at the Miami Marine Stadium. The culminating act was Sammy Davis Jr., backed up by the Mike Curb Congregation. After his finale of the "Candyman", Sammy gave the President this odd hug, which surprised everybody, including Nixon. The moment is captured in this widely known AP photograph. If only a wider lens had included the scene another 20 feet further over to the right side of this image, we would see-- standing in the darkened stage wings--me. I was with a small Texas contingent of kids who had drawn stage crew duty, and spent the entire day lugging TONS of very heavy equipment across the bridge onto this stage, which is actually floating in Miami harbor. Some of those speakers, such as the one on the left foreground, were bloody heavy to carry. A little later, Mike Curb went on to a term as California's Lieutenant Governor, Sammy got a nice visit to the Oval Office before President Nixon vacated it, and I finished high school..
