An empirical correlation between the luminosity and the maximum rotational velocity attained by the galaxy (Tully & Fisher 1977)
luminosity: from surface photometry
rotational velocity: most often measured from the radio neutral-hydrogen 21cm line profile, or from the optical rotation curve
