Homework #2 Questions

Chapter 18, #3

Summarize the evidence for or against life on the following sites in the solar system: Mars, Europa, and Titan. Why do astronomers think life is unlikely anywhere else in the solar system?

Chapter 18, #5

Astronomers sent a radio signal from the Aercibo Observatory to M 13, a globular cluster at a distance of 26,000 light years. Apart from the distance, why is M 13 a poor choice of targets if we are trying to inform carbon-based, intelligent organisms like ourselves of our existence?

Chapter 18, #10

In your opinion, what would be the consequences for humanity of the following: a) The discovery of microbial life in the icy oceans of Europa. b) Firm evidence that Earth is the only place where life exists in the solar system. c) The discovery of artificial signals of unknown meaning coming from a Sun-like star 10 light years away. d) Evidence that Earth-like planets are common around a wide range of stars. e) The arrival of an alien spacecraft and visitors at prominent places like the United Nations headquarters in New York. f) Strong scientific arguments that intelligent life on Earth was a fluke that was unlikely to have occurred anywhere else in the universe.
