Lecture #1

Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram

Factor governing stellar evolution: a star's mass

H-R diagram gives you information about the stellar cluster, e.g. age, metallicity, etc.

Stellar Classification

Spectral class:OBAFGKM (oh be a fine guy kiss me)

Luminosity classes: I, II, III, IV, V (bright to dim)

Stellar Spectrum

Lecture #2

Stellar Remnants

White dwarf -- small and stable

Neutron star -- very small and may explode

Black hole -- singularity

Main sequence stars supported by pressure, and held together by gravity

Pressure: moving molecules exert forces against anything pressing on them
