  • Description
ORION is a Gateway laptop publicly available to Division members for presentations on campus (use off campus must be receive special authorization from the vice-chair or the computing committee chair; currently Jean or Roger, respectively).

For example, it can be used with our computer projector (available from 8965 MS) to give a PowerPoint talk/lecture. (If you use it in conjunction with a projector, make sure that the projector is connected and turned on before you boot it.)

  • Access
It is normally located in 8145E MS, where it is connected to the network at all times (so you can access files on its disk remotely without physical access). To pick it up, go to 8145E MS first; if no one is there, go the computing office (8370 MS).

Please send e-mail a few days before you need it to make sure it has not been reserved by someone else. It is automatically resevered for the speakers when talks are scheduled and is therefore not available to others at those times (unless the speakers have confirmed they will not use it).

There are two loing modes: network and local. If you are going to transfer files from other computers on the network or to access the internet, you should use the network login. Otherwise, if you plan to use the laptop as a standalone system, you must use the local login.

  • network login
Make sure you have selected ``ASTROUCLAEDU'' on the third line (``Log on to''), and use your Microsoft Network username/password on the first/second line(s). If you are already using a PC on a regular basis, you probably already have a Windows account. If you do not, or if you are not sure, please
    send e-mail to inquire.

  • local login
Make sure you have selected ``ORION (this computer)'' on the third line (``Log on to''), Type ``Guest'' as username. You can get the password for that account from the system administrator or a previous user of the system.
  • Files
Please put all your personal files in a folder with your username under C:\users to prevent clutter. (This is the only folder that is shared on the network.) Files left in random locations will periodically be moved to the C:\users\unknown folder (and eventually removed from there).

Please be considerate: There is only so much space available; delete files that you know you will not need again (once you have transfered them to a ``fixed'' computer of course). Also, keep in mind that by nature, the laptop can remain offline for a while, so you cannot be guaranteed to have access to the files you have on it at any given time.

  • Software
In addition to the Windows 2000 Professional (SP2) operating system, the following packages should be available (this list may not be up to date):
