We present and discuss the properties of the X-ray sources detected in the multiwavelength survey of the Chandra Deep Field South. In particular, we show how the X-ray data allows one to trace the evolution of nuclear activity and star formation up to very high redshifts,sheding light on the epoch when the formation of the cosmic structures reaches its highest efficiency.
