Research Interests:

• Prof. Ong is carrying out research in Astroparticle Physics- an exciting, young field at the interface between physics and astronomy. Recent work focuses on the astrophysics of the high-energy Universe, as revealed by gamma-rays, neutrinos, and cosmic rays. He also has a strong interest in particle physics and astronomy.

• He is involved in several experiments designed to detect energetic particles from astrophysical sources. The major current projects are:
  
  • STACEE - A gamma-ray telescope using an array of large solar heliostat mirrors. STACEE is a pioneering experiment that detects gamma rays of energies between 50 and 500 GeV. Regular observations started in 2002 and will continue until 2007. STACEE is located at Sandia National Laboratories, near Albuquerque NM, USA.
  
  
  • VERITAS - Array of four large telescopes using the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique. VERITAS is sensitive to gamma rays of energies between 100 GeV and 50 TeV. As of early 2007, the full array is now operational at the basecamp of the Whipple Observatory on Mt. Hopkins in southern Arizona, USA. VERITAS is expected to operate well into the next decade.
